Diethyl azodicarboxylate, conventionally abbreviated as DEAD and sometimes as DEADCAT, is an organic compound with the structural formula CH 3 CH 2 O 2 CN=NCO 2 CH 2 CH molecular structure consists of a central azo functional group, RN=NR, flanked by two ethyl ester groups. This orange-red liquid is a valuable reagent but also quite dangerous and explodes upon ance: Orange to red to orange liquid.   Phosgene and its safer derivatives – diphosgene and triphosgene – are industrially important chemicals used in the manufacture of polyurethanes[] and polycarbonates[] and in the synthesis of various active pharmaceutical ingredients.[] This market sector generates approximately 8 million tons of products and the global demand for phosgene is about 5 million tons per year.[]Cited by: 4.

In this manual, the authors compare the range of applications for phosgene with that of the alternative compounds, dealing in detail with the possible uses of diphosgene, triphosgene, carbon dioxide, organic carbonates, oxalylchloride and many oth.

Triphosgene was decomposed quantitatively to phosgene by chloride ion. The reaction course was monitored by IR spectroscopy (React-IR), showing that diphosgene was an intermediate.

Christoffers Quaternary Stereocenters - Challenges and Solutions for Organic Synthesis   The book Phosgenations - A Handbook [55] discusses in detail novel and old uses of phosgene (see Sections andin particular). However, phosgene is clearly highly toxic (threshold limit value - TLV of ppm), but acrolein, for example, has the same TLV and is produced in quantities of several millions worldwide.
